What is the Sacrament of Reconciliation or Confession?
The Sacrament is our opportunity to be reconciled with God when we have wondered from his ways, in thought, word or deed. And our contrite for what we have done or failed to do. Rather like the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32), we have come to our senses and want to be one with Our Father again. Imagine having an argument with a loved one, without holding back! Once you have finished, it would be impossible just to shrug your shoulders and walk away, for this would hurt that relationship. You would actually have to say the words, and be sorry, willing to build that relationship afresh. The sacrament allows us to actually say the words of being sorry to God and receive the affirmation of being forgiven. For God always loves us, and is ready to forgive through his Son Jesus Christ.
Is it confidential?
It is important to remember that what is said during the Sacrament is confidential, and the priest cannot reveal anything he has heard, not even back to you afterwards (unless you ask him too)!
How should I make my Confession?
When we make our Confession, we should prepare beforehand, to recall what we want to bring to God.
We should tell the priest when it was the last time we made our confession (don’t worry if that was a long time ago) and our state of life e.g. married, single etc. and this will help to put what you say into context.
What happens after I have made my Confession?
After you have made your confession, the priest will normally offer some advice and give you a small penance (e.g. a small prayer) to show that you are sorry, which is said after you have left the reconciliation room. The priest will then give you God’s forgiveness.
How often should I go for Confession?
The Sacrament of Reconciliation is like maintaining a car, it is better to maintain it regularly than to wait for a breakdown or a crash! Most people find it useful to come to the Sacrament at regular intervals as part of their Spiritual Rule of Life. Above all, the Sacrament is a wonderful gift of God’s love.
